AstraVXR hits Golf GTI underbelly

Vauxhall has confirmed that its 237bhp Astra VXR will cost £18,995, £1000 less than the 197bhp Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Order books are now open on the latest salvo in the hot-hatch power war, and deliveries to the first buyers are expected this September.

The VXR outpaces the GTI by reaching 60mph in 6.2sec and powering on to a top speed of 152mph.

Vauxhall promises a driving experience that will ‘stimulate the most committed enthusiasts’. The manufacturer has fitted performance brakes and has worked with sports car maker Lotus to tune the front-wheel-drive VXR’s chassis. Vauxhall’s adaptive damper system will be available as an option for further enhanced ability.

Standard equipment on the VXR includes traction control, front, side and curtain airbags, air-conditioning and sporty Recaro bucket seats. Sports bodykit and blue brake calipers also distinguish the VXR from standard models in the range.
